Hoover Dam (and Other Things)!

We visited the Hoover Dam, and took the Power Plant and Dam tours. It was hot - well over 100 degrees. Still, a beautiful drive in our rented Mustang, and a very memorable experience. There are a few other pictures here from our other activities as well.
Susan at the Hoover Dam - about a 30 minute ride from Las Vegas - when traffic isn't bad. Post 9-11security has slowed traffic a lot. It was about 110 degrees out. Incredibly hot! View from the dam. You can see the new Hoover Dam bypass being built - almost done.

One of the inspection tunnels, where inspectors look for cracks in the dam. Only harmless hairline cracks have been found. Looking down a vertical ventilation tunnel. This is called the "stairway to heaven." Susan and me at the Hoover Dam. Too bad I blinked, as I often do.

This monument is dedicated to the men who built the dam. A closer view. Susan's dad was a steel worker, like the one memorialized here. The old visitor's center, where the map is located.

Our room, on the 22nd floor of the Hilton Hotel, had a wonderful view. Note the Stratosphere, where we attended a Star Trek party The view of downtown Las Vegas from our hotel. Susan and I blew $60 in the slot machines (not these though). I would have had more fun tossing quarters into Lake Meade Susan in the new City Center - where shops sell things we don't want for prices we can't afford.
